| The best dunk in the 2011 Slam Dunk Contest. |
He was
able to bridge gaps and he was able bring people together.
That
is Mico Halili for you... and in
some ways Jason Webb.
Nakamfutah!
When Dondon Hontiveros joined Mico and Jason
in the commentating panel for the Hala
Bola 2011 PBA All-Star Weekend (Skills
Contest), they did something... cool. First up... their All-Star weekend
versions are funny and insane! The way they insulted Dominic Uy, made Willie
Miller sound like Richard Del
Rosario, and frequently calling the BMEG
Derby Ace players BMEG Derby Eggs
is just superb.
Chot Reyes’ chest hairs?
Hmmm...
not so much.
If you
can’t watch the All-Star because of the non-existing defense and the winning
side that really doesn’t matter, you have to love the All-Stat because of their
hilarious commentating.
Second
up, they made Dondon Hontiveros plead TV model and host Valerie Concepcion to come to Boracay. How in the blue hell did
they bait the Cebuano Hotshot to
channel an Inday Badiday Eye to Eye
visitor just baffles me.
What
happened next?
Just
like a heartbeat, Valerie flew to Boracay
to be with Dondon!
The
All-Star coverage instantly became a romantic victory as they gave a loving
couple a chance to be with another despite Valerie logging a bunch of frequent
flyer miles and Mico and Jason kidding Dondon throughout the game.
They
also did the same to Ginebra’s JC Intal
but that didn’t seem to work.
When
at the tail end of the match it was evident that both sides want to one-up the
either. And just like the players and the coaches, Jason and Mico dialled down
the humor in lieu of their impeccable play-by-play. In the end, the North All-Stars notched their second
straight win over the South All-Stars
to the tune of 133-129. Marc Pingris
was the All-Star MVP after finishing
the match with 24 points, 9 rebounds, 2
assists, 2 steals, and a block.
Hopefully
we get to see more game coverage like this. Straight-up commentating can’t
really cut the primetime dominance held by the soap operas.
Maybe
adding flavour to their telecasts can make heads turn to their direction?
Game
over.
