The last time I saw this matchup was when UST defeated Ateneo in the 2006 UAAP Finals.

Themyth of Super Ababou mellowed when Rajko Toroman demoted Dylan to reservestatus.

Well that sucked but it's not as if he is the only ex-UAAP MVP who struggled under the Serbian coaching sensation.

Before his entry to the Smart-Gilassquad, Ababou was the University ofSanto Tomas’ scoring machine. He was part of the UST squad that wrestledthe title away from Ateneo’s JC Intal,Doug Kramer, and Macky Escalona – which was enough for me to root for theendeavours of Ababou, Jervy Cruz, KhasimMirza, Japs Cuan, Francis Allera, Mark Canlas, Jun Cortez, and the othersinvolved in that Pido Jarencioensemble. Ababou then emerged from the shadows of Cruz when the behemothgraduated and Dylan became the Growling Tigers’ heart and soul. He caught hisUAAP Most Valuable Player trophy when he and Mirza were UST’s fangs. However,the problem is that while Ababou has the size to contend at the four spot – heis not an inside presence. UST lost the UAAP title that season because therewas no one to contend against the bigs of Ateneo, UE, and FEU. This problem haunted the squad until the entry of Cameroonian Karim Abdul.

When Ababouwas relegated to the ninth spot at the2011 PBA Draft, people felt Ababou’s stock has severely fallen. Well, ifyou compare him to RJ Jazul – heseems luckier. Jazul fell to the mid-second round of the 2010 PBA Draft becausethe former Letran Knight is toooffensive-minded to play the point guard position and too small to play theshooting guard role. This also sucks for Jazul because his former Smart-Gilasand Letran tag team partner Rey Guevarrawas selected as the third pick overall to the surprise of many. But while Jazul will have a shot formore minutes since he has joined former Smart-Gilas teammate Magi Sison at the Shopinas.com Clickers’ roster... Ababou will have to fight for histime against veterans Danny Seigle,Sunday Salvacion, and Leo Avenido and Ababou’s former UST teammate Allein Maliksi.

Maliksiwas a mere backup to Ababou during his UST days but Maliksi spent his post-USTdays honing his craft at the PBAD-League. Maliksi playing for the CebuanaLhuillier Gems, took the squad to the D-League finals. Despite failing togive the team the title, Maliksi ended up as the league’s first-ever MVP.

Thisis the reason why Maliksi was picked two places before Ababou. When it wasGinebra’s turn to pick, they were shocked that Ababou was still available butthey resisted temptation and managed to stick with their original yearningwhich was Reil Cervantes.

Duringthe 2011-12 PBA All-Filipino Cup’sfirst week, Ababou scored his first DNP.

Thatwas enough to wake up Super Ababou.

I amjust baffled as to why people can’t use Ababou. The guy will resort toeverything just to be important. I saw him in the NBA All-Stars exhibition match doing the dirty work on the insideand making things happen for the squad. I saw him in the 2011 Jones Cup when he resisted sickness to administer the neededtools to make his self visible. I do not believe for a second that Junel Baculi had a game plan that hadDylan Ababou getting the scoring nod over Miller and Seigle. But with theinconsistency of Miller and the absence of Seigle, Baculi gave Ababou thechance to shine and he laid waste of the currently-struggling Ginebra squad. Ababou used his range toextend the defense and he was also helpful at the defensive end, especially inBarako Bull’s epic second quarter run. Ginebra had no answer for him and Iwonder if Ginebra is having second thoughts because they passed up anopportunity to snag him in the draft. He finished the ballgame with 20 points –the third 20-point game for a rookie this season after Paul Lee and Mac Baracael.

Hethen churned out the fourth 20-point rookie game after laying waste of theundermanned Talk N Text Tropang Texters.I believe his output is more impressive here than the Ginebra game becauseWillie Miller had his most explosive output in five conferences with 27 pointsand yet he again finished with 20. MickPennisi, the most consistent Barako Bull player this season at 36, had 18points. Ababou managed to dislodge Sunday Salvacion from the minutes he had in his first game and he caused Leo Avenido to DNP the team’s third game.

Whilethe verdict is in on whether or not Ababou’s scoring outpour will continue witha healthy Seigle in tow. Salvacion and Avenido are bound to reclaim their minutes plus Maliksi is also impressive in their games. But as of this moment, Super Ababoutakes the cake! With the Fil-Am invasion, MBA acquisitions, and the collegiatesuperstars that came in and dominated the league, who was the last rookie toscore consecutive 20 points in their first two games in the majors?

And yeah...

AlexCabagnot is reaping the benefits of Petron’s sickbay stable. One of threeBoosters averaging 34 minutes and more, Cabagnot is the team’s leading scorerand passer. With the way he is playing, Cabagnot is bound to have a mythicalseason.

STATS: 17.7PPG– 2.7RPG – 4.7APG – 2.7SPG – 1.0BPG

Like Isaid, Lutz is claiming the playing time Dondon Hontiveros abandoned when he gotinjured. Honti will have to earn his minutes once he returns because Lutz isnot going to give up his spot easily. This early, the race for the Rookie ofthe Year award looms to be Lutz against Lee.

Yes,you saw it. This is not Gabe Freeman... it's just Arwind Santos. Santos in three games is averaging 18 rebounds. His output is moreor less the equivalent of B-Meg’s starting five. If you think Arwind Santos isgreatly pissed when he was snubbed in last year’s MVP race, then with hisperformance you can never deny how vast his arsenal has become.

Petronhas four players in the list while TalkN Text has three players inside the top ten.

Meanwhile,Ginebra needs to firm up on theirrepresentation because aside from MarkCaguioa, there are no other Gins inside the Top Twenty!

Remembering her smile

The last time I was in Legazpi, Albay or Pilar, Sorsogon was when I attended my cousin’s wedding. I was actually in college then which means it was more or less a decade ago. Hours before I published this blog, I went to the Araneta Center Bus Terminal to pay for the bus tickets. I lasted Baguio and it was a six hour-ride. I paid almost 500 pesos for the fare. Legazpi City is 750 pesos worth and 9 to 12 hours long. I brace the ass-numbing experience.

In a few hours my sister and I will embark on a trip to pay my last respects for the woman that almost single-handedly groomed my dad and the rest of her kids into what they are now.

My grandma is now in heaven and is finally reunite with my grandpa. My dad was only eight years old when my grandfather passed away in 1960. She has been a loving mother and grandmother and I am torn on whether or not I should be happy or sad that she has moved on. While I will miss her nurture, I know that she has suffered a lot. I will forever remember how I would sleep on her lap, sit on her lap, ruffle her hair, pinch her cheeks, kiss her cheeks, embrace her whenever she visits our house, and laugh at her whenever she asks me when I will marry.

I am looking forward in seeing my relatives and at the same time reminisce the good times I shared with her.

She will be missed.

Chris Lao parodies self

Months passed after his emphatic blurt that made him a target in social media, Chris Lao is back with a vengeance.

Yes dude, the best way to stop looking like an ass is play yourself as an ass.

Let’s face it – Bill Clinton won a bunch of Americans despite exposed as a womanizer because he knows how to poke fun on himself. Now whenever Clinton is on TV, you have to expect him to poke fun at himself. I like it when Bill comes in the fray while people cringe whenever they see Monica Lewinsky. Hell, even women talk shows veer away from putting her on the spotlight. The same can be said with Al Gore’s reinvention.

And please, let’s not forget on how Charlie Sheen “won” his battle against his critics.

Back to Lao. Like I said, he salvaged respect by parodying himself with this BPI Auto Loan straight-to-Youtube TVC. It helps that the guy is polished with his articulation and could create the same emotions that is enough to duplicate his epic fail. He was never an actor to begin with but compare his acting to some “actors” on primetime TV today and you’ll he is on a class of his own. With this performance, Lao has managed to “awesome-ize” himself.

But with regards to the commercial as a whole… it was kind of so-so.

While it could have helped if Jun Veneracion was actually the one asking the questions, the promo did say that Chris Lao drove to another flood again.

Anyway one major qualm was that the creative team could have grabbed the GMA clip and it wouldn’t matter. The commercial is too factual. I would have liked this more if they “Leslie Nielsen-ed” the commercial. Leave the flood alone but exaggerate the reactions of the bystanders and the array of floating debris. Like I said, Lao’s acting is superb in this viral commercial and imagine him blurting out while the people in the surroundings slowly do crazy things.

After the graphics part, I would have given Lao a final moment to blurt out. The TVC’s running time is 75 seconds and I doubt BPI will shelve out money to give this commercial TV spots. I would have extended this to 90 seconds with him continuing to blurt out. If they want to keep it at 75 then the message of the loan should have been on around the 45-second timeline and then make it return to the Chris Lao video with the crawler saying the benefits of the auto loan.

And then add a punchline at the end to further strengthen the fact that the commercial is trying to be funny and it is not just milking on the person in the mix.

But nonetheless it was an epic commercial in the “I should be informed” kind of way.

DallasMavericks’ behemoth Tyson Chandler, teammate Shawn Marion, and current MinnesotaTimberwolf Kevin Love mistook the meaning of lockout and elevated it to a wholenew level.

Now weknow the “valid” reason why these three were conspicuously missing in theproceedings of the lockout.

Also...I can’t believe Shawn Marion is such a tattletale.

We allhate the NBA lockout.

However,one thing good that happened on this mess is the jokes that came with thescenario.

I don’tknow if many of you have seen this but this was an awesome clip from the Funny or Die website. Basically it has Los Angeles Lakers’ superstar Kobe Bryanttalking about the NBA lockout and among other things Space Jam 2, the abundance of players whose names start with theletter “D”, and a brand-new Kobe look.

Charles Barkley and Reggie Miller talks about the NBA lockout

Asearly as June I had calculated a draft wish list that will be valuable inexalting vengeance on the seven other players that whooped my ass on myprevious NBA Fantasy League.

Inessence, I vowed to collect my money before the MY other fantasy league’sdraft.

Ihaven’t collected the money though.

And Ihaven’t exalted revenge.

Withthe first two weeks of the 2011-12 NBAseason gone, I brace for the worst. The owners want 50-50 but the playersare asking for 53-47. The players want to play for major cities but the leaguewants to give minor cities a chance. The players demand the league’s full cooperationand yet they would rather play overseas and play in pickup games than helping Derek Fisher on his “crusade forjustice”.

Iabsolutely think this situation is stupid because this CBA is messing up withthe fans. In this interview, CharlesBarkley and Reggie Miller bombed the KobeBryant, Lebron James, Dwyane Wade, and the other NBA superstars becausethey can’t support the cause whole-heartedly. At the same time, the duo askedthe team owners to stop hiring incompetent buffoons that will give a hugeamount of cash to players that don’t even deserve half of what they’re getting.

Thefunny thing about this Youtube clip is that if you go to the comments section,you’ll find out that they were the only two NBA legends to NOT share theirawesomeness on the NBA ‘12 game.

Sevenseasons tucked in his belt, Ompong was a delight to watch. I got to check abunch of old tapes of his work and he was a big-time scoring threat. Despiteplaying alongside the likes of Fernandez, Jaworski, Florencio, and Arnaiz, hestill kept a 14.4 career points per game.

RANKED THIS LOW:

Economicinstability and the fact that the PBA is a young and unstable league led Segurato ditch the PBA. He would return in 1983 but the comeback for the then-31 yearold Ompong was only good for a season. Had he played more, he would have beenpart of the 25 Greatest Players list.

He isstill relatively young and he’ll probably pad his stats more with Alaska. Healso had to earn his way in Red Bull. During his rookie season, he only played4 games and a total of 34 minutes. A couple of achievement awards could alsohelp his cause.

Hestarted his career sharing PG duties with Pido Jarencio. When Jarencio left thesquad, he had to contend with Jayjay Helterbrand. He could have earned more achievementsbut his career ended abruptly in 2005 when the Kings opted to not give him acontract renewal after he was sidelined for a season.

He wasthe first and only Arellano Chief to become first pick overall. He was anamazing athlete for Shell but it took him time to shine in the PBA. After heblossomed, he was sent by Shell to Ginebra for the draft rights of Romy delaRosa where his game slowly deteriorated.

He wasone of the all-time greats of Philippine basketball even at the time when thePBA has yet to exist. He is an insanely prolific scorer with a career averageof 14.0ppg despite the fact that in his seven seasons, The Fox played for fivedifferent teams.

RANKED THIS LOW:

Mumarwas 29 when the PBA started which in a way shortened his stint in the PBA(although Jaworski was the same age as his). Also, the five teams he played forwere not championship squads. If you think about it, he’s kinda like the BongAlvarez of his generation.

RANKED THIS HIGH:

He wasthe first San Miguel player to win Rookie of the Year honors. He was aspeedster of sorts that can hit the long range bombs and at the same timeattack the basket. He ended his 9-year career with an 11.3 scoring averagefinishing it with the Alaska Air Force.

RANKED THIS LOW:

Whenhe played for Alaska he shared point guard duties with Frankie Lim buteventually Lim got the better in the minutes. Saldana took a backseat for hisother teammates like Lim, Bogs Adornado, Ricky Relosa, Yoyoy Villamin, DongPolistico, Rey Lazaro, and Biboy Ravanes. Saldana managed to squeak in stintswith Presto and Pop Cola but he was now a shadow of his former self.

Inever really saw Kutch in action but he ranks 21st in the All-Time Scoring Listwith 15.5ppg. At 6’3 he played center-forward for U-Tex, Filmanbank, and CDCP.During his stint with the league, he was one of the key players to outsideCrispa and Toyota.

RANKED THIS LOW:

He was27 during the first PBA season. He was probably a MICAA guy that would haveloved the PBA to come in early. Had he played for a few more seasons, he couldhave at least had a couple of achievement awards. Also for a center, he neverreally registered a high amount of boards.

RANKED THIS LOW:

Unlikehis brother, his scoring skills are limited. His offense concentrated on postups, putbacks, and dunks and he wasn’t really a great passer. Perhaps thebiggest flaw of his career is that he is often injured. From top draw, he wasrelegated to bench-warming.

RANKED THIS LOW:

Like Isaid, he was a good player in his pre-Shell days but it seems his career thenwas on auto pilot. As a testament to this, he was traded to Shell alongside RobWainwright for the legendary Ronnie Magsanoc. Teaming up with Benjie Paras andChris Jackson was good for his career.

I knowhe is a rebounder and nothing more but back in the MBA, he was also a post-upthreat. His wingspan makes it for him to scour shots in lieu for putbacks. Iknow he’s likely on his way to slowing down but I guess in two to three yearshe could claim an achievement award or two.

RANKED THIS LOW:

WhenLocsin was traded by Ginebra to Pop Cola for Vergel Meneses, The Tank’s careerwent downhill. He drifted from team to team that unlike Robert Jaworski, didn’tknow how to use him properly. But fact is the biggest reason why his stardropped was because of the towering Fil-Ams that made Locsin vulnerable. Andwhile Alvin Patrimonio and Nelson Asaytono learned to adjust by nailing threepointers, he didn’t.

83 WILLIE PEARSON

He isa scoring machine during his olden days and he finished his career with 12.7points and 4.8 rebounds. He is the PBA’s first Fil-Am Rookie of the Year. Hedebuted in 1984 for the Redmanizers which was also Crispa’s last PBA year. Hewent on to play for Great Taste, Shell, and Alaska before returning to the USin 1989.

RANKED THIS LOW:

Icould say that the reason behind the low rank is because he just played for sixseasons. However, by this time, players may have already checked his style. Ulitmately,Pearson never thought of the PBA as a viable career because if he did, he wouldstick around and milk his talents to the fullest just like the late 90’s andearly 2000’s Fil-Americans still playing in the PBA.

He averaged in double figures for five consecutive times. Duringhis Alaska days, Tim Cone calls him out to be his eyes and ears on the court.

RANKED THIS LOW:

Despitehis amazing skills, he barely got the nod of the PBA faithful. He is only aone-time all-star while guys like EJ Feihl and Bonel Balingit has three. Also,being used as trade bait took a toll in his stats. If you think about it,before the trade that sent him to San Miguel, he was better than LA Tenorio. Hescoring averages also slipped after he suffered an injury in the 2008-09season.

Theguy started as a sub for Purefoods, getting minimal fanfare, but after stellarperformances playing for Shell and Air21, Purefoods re-acquired the Cebuano ace.He optimizes the team’s effectiveness whenever he is on board and stat-wise, hegets a lot of rebounds, assists, and steals per game.

RANKED THIS LOW:

Whenhe was in PBL’s Chowking, he was a scoring powerhouse who always had the ballduring clutch situations. This was the only arsenal that left him when heturned pro. His game changed drastically and he was relegated to his pass-firstpersona. It’s impossible to jumpstart his offense though considering he playsfor a team that’s overloaded with talent and he is on the brink of retirement.

As hisother Ateneo teammates struggle to find their place in the PBA, LA Tenorio iseager to make his mark. Coming from the star-studded 2006 draft class, Tenorio’scareer took flight after he was traded to Alaska in exchange for Mike Cortez.He has since blossomed into a marquee point guard and it looks like Alaska hasfound their second coming of Johnny Abarrientos.

RANKED THIS LOW:

Tenoriois just starting his career. Actually he wouldn’t be in this list had not forhis Mythical Five citation. If Tenorio continues to brace his PBA tenure withAlaska, then he’ll likely retire with a Hall of Fame career. Once he getstraded and loses the minutes he has with the squad, then we might see his successfulstint to slip by.

People have been forgetting that since2003, Carey has scored in double figures per season thrice. Come to think ofit, the guy is blessed because Talk N Text has been treating him well.

RANKED THIS LOW:

WhileTNT has been giving him the minutes and the breaks, you can’t help but wonderwhether or not staying put with the Texters is such a good idea. With thetalent load the Texters have right now, sometimes you can’t notice his game.Perhaps in another team he can have more minutes, more plays, and moreachievements.

THE MAGIC MAN

He can run the floor, hit the long range bomband claim the board when it misses. He winded up his career with 10.0 pointsand 5.7 rebounds per outing.

RANKED THIS LOW:

Despiteplaying for ten seasons, The Magic Man was injury prone throughout his PBAcareer. When Ginebra lost faith that he will have a healthy career, he was sentto Alaska and his career when downhill from there. If he had more healthyseasons, he could have been one of the best forwards the league has everproduced.

He wasthe towering presence in Alaska’s vaulted triangle offense in the 90’s. He isunafraid to mix it up with imports especially when it comes to reboundingopportunities and given the chance, he would score a lot. He was also a giftedpasser which is why he was important in Tim Cone’s rotation.

RANKED THIS LOW:

Sure,Juinio won a grand slam with the Aces. However, remember when he was tradedalongside Johnny Abarrientos for Ali Peek and Jon Ordonio? He had his bestoffensive season with the squad where he posted 13.3ppg. The way he played forthe Pop Cola Panthers was like mixing Jun Limpot’s savvy with Dennis Espino’sinside dominance! Who knows what would happen to his career if he didn’t havetoo many seasons with Alaska.

90 RENE CANENT

1975 – 80

CAREER HIGHLIGHTS:

RANKED THIS HIGH:

He wasone of the players in this list that I haven’t seen play. When I checked hisstats, he played for Tanduay for six seasons and he checked in with a careeraverage of 13.8 points and 4.6 assists. When I asked my dad about his gamestyle, he said Canent was a speedster with a very smart basketball IQ. He oncedished 19 assists while playing for Tanduay during the early 80’s.

RANKED THIS LOW:

If heplayed for another 2 or 3 seasons, he could have had 5,000 points and 2,000assists. Instead, he chose to end his career with just six seasons. Fact is, hepioneered the PBA at 29 and his good ol’ days were seen playing for the MICAA. Andyeah during those days, there were less awards given to players.

So wesaw a bunch of names from the 70’s, 80’s, 90’s, and 2000’s.

Ninetywere named and ten more to finalize this.

And also returning to theson-in-law tag, think is a reason why Arboleda enjoyed success in the PBA. Basicallyhe is the Triple H of the PBA.

RANKED THIS LOW:

Heonly averaged 1.6 points during his PBA debut with Tanduay. Actually it’s hardto find Wynne this high on the list because he like Gary David, he shone thebrightest under Bo Perasol and now both David and Perasol are working alongsideelsewhere. Also, he was almost banned from the league after bringing pain to aheckler. By the way, he has been part of the All-Star game. Why is that?

72 CHITO LOYZAGA

Theguy can score a mere two points, two rebounds, and two assists and yet becomethe game’s best player. Son of former national team standout and perhaps thegreatest Philippine basketball player ever Caloy Loyzaga, Chito was known forhis scoring as well as his superb import-stopping defense. Donning histrademark #41 jersey and headband, he can play all five positions with ease.

RANKED THIS LOW:

He hasbeen Robert Jaworski’s right hand man since their Toyota days like FrancisArnaiz. But unlike Arnaiz, Chito is a leader more than a scoring provider. Hewould often settle in playing defense than getting stats and you can blame hisselflessness for that. He finished his career with a 9.3 scoring average and4.4 assist average. I believe he could have done more if he was more assertiveto do more.

The6’9 sniper was an asset to Yeng Guiao’s Red Bull because he knows when to hitthe big shots. Additionally, Mick will never back down from a fight. He wasactually the last key Red Bull star to leave the team when financial woes begunto set in. He has one of the best three-point percentages in the history of theleague and that ability has garnered him numerous nominations to the nationalsquad.

RANKED THIS LOW:

Mickdoesn’t really use a post-game to score and that’s disappointing because he hasheight. Also, when the Red Bull core was being replaced by bench warmers duringthe late 2000’s, instead of raising his scoring average, his points begun todecrease. In the brink of retirement, the Slickster never really became abig-time scorer. Basically he is a better version of Mike Hrabak.

74 MARC PINGRIS

Since playing for Purefoods/B-MEG, he has become an asset intheir surge for supremacy. Whenever the situation arises, he will do well, justlike when he became the Finals MVP of the 2005-06 Philippine Cup.

RANKED THIS LOW:

He isstill relatively young and can still go. He needs to come out of the shadows ofJames Yap and Kerby Raymundo because he has the tools to level up with hisperformances. He scored in double figures for the first time in the 2010-11season because Raymundo was injured so that means he is capable of such feat. Also,he needs to stay healthy since he is frequently injured.

75 REY EVANGELISTA

1994 – 2008

CAREER HIGHLIGHTS:

Hishustle on the floor and defensive presence are the key arsenals of hisproductive PBA career. He is a rebounding demon who knows how to work his magicin the land of giants. His best PBA season could pretty be the 2002 PBA seasonwhere during that year’s Governor’s Cup, he was named the Conference’s BestPlayer.

RANKED THIS LOW:

Tobegin with, he was not athletic and he was too slow to be a small forward andtoo small to be a power forward. If not for his hard work, dedication, highbasketball IQ and craftiness, the 1994 Draft’s second pick overall could havebeen a bust. His outputs slowed down when Ryan Gregorio became coach andinsisted to use guys like James Yap and Kerby Raymundo instead of him.

76 DON ALLADO

THE DON

1999 – PRESENT

CAREER HIGHLIGHTS:

JoiningAlaska at the middle of the 1999 PBA season to finish his commitments withDLSU, this big-time athlete slowly became Alaska’s focal point in the middle. Whenthe 1996 Grand Slam roster were slowly getting eased out, he became one of TimCone’s main guys. It is with the Aces where he will get a bunch of awards andcontest the fact that he is one force to be reckoned with.

RANKED THIS LOW:

Alladoonly average 10 points or more twice in his career – one was in 2003 and theother is in the 2005-06 season. After Allado was traded to TNT for WillieMiller, his career began to sag. He bounced from team to team and it didn’ttake long to figure out that Allado’s starting days are over. It’s a shamereally since he had the tools to become successful.

77 NOY CASTILLO

THE GOLDEN BOY

1998 – 2008

At one point in his career he averaged 17.4 points in oneseason.

RANKED THIS LOW:

Theproblem with Castillo is after his breakout year that earned him a Mythicalspot, he missed a ton of games due to injury. During his final season, he wasbumped off from his spot by Roger Yap and then-Hotdog Chico Lanete. The entryof James Yap and the emergence of Peter June Simon also did not help his cause.He was a forgotten man when he retired.

78 ALEX CABAGNOT

CRUNCH TIME

For the guys checking this out, Cabagnot is a late addition. AlexCabagnot is slowly becoming one of the most popular guards in the PBA. Hestarted in the league with a rivalry with Mark Caguioa but in reality, hisposition prompts him to go mano y mano with Jayjay Helterbrand. He can orchestratethe ball well and he can deliver the crucial baskets to seal the fates of theiropponents. He proved to be the right guard to replace Olsen Racela in thePetron/SMB lineup.

RANKED THIS LOW:

Cabagnot’shigh assists average will give him a fast rise to accomplish 2,000 assists andmaybe he’ll end his career with 5,000 points. However, he needs to claim a seatin the Mythical spot. I don’t if what’s keeping him was his once intolerableattitude that pissed Buddy Encarnado when he was still with Sta. Lucia but theonly way he will score such feat is by taking Petron to numerous finalsappearances.

79 VINCE HIZON

THE PRINCE

1994 – 2003

CAREER HIGHLIGHTS:

RANKED THIS HIGH:

ThePrince in his prime was one of the league’s best outside shooters. Picked byPurefoods, he was traded to Ginebra and after that, he became Coach RobertJaworski’s chief gunner. Whenever he hits a three, the commentators wouldexclaim “Hizon Fire” which is a take from “He’s On Fire”! He played a majorrole in the rise of Ginebra in the late 90’s because of his scoring. With hislooks and his playing style he can probably be the 90’s version of FrancisArnaiz.

RANKED THIS LOW:

Let’sface it – he had a good thing going for himself until he moved to the MBA.Vince was doing hosting chores for Sports Unlimited which paved the way for hisentry to the IloIlo Megavoltz – automatically making him the poster boy of theleague. Unfortunately for him, MBA went bankrupt and when he returned to thePBA via Red Bull, Yeng Guiao was only giving him sporadic minutes. Maybe it’sright to say that Jawo was responsible for his success in the league.

80 PIDO JARENCIO

THE FIREMAN

1986 – 2001

CAREER HIGHLIGHTS:

Duringthe pre-Marlou, post-Chito Loyzaga phase of Ginebra in the early 90’s, theKings were perennial cellar dwellers. Jarencio used this to pad his stats. Allof a sudden, he returned to the offensive powerhouse that he once was back in UST.When Marlou and the others came in, he was a key contributor and it resulted tosuccess.

RANKED THIS LOW:

In his16 seasons in the league, there were at least three or four seasons he couldhave lived without. He was a journeyman during his stints with San Miguel,Presto, Purefoods, and Swift before getting big time recognition for his workin Ginebra. Like Popeye is with his spinach, it would have been better for hiscareer if all the PBA games were played in his self-proclaimed home turf, theAraneta Coliseum.

He isa power forward trapped in a shooting guard’s body. Arnie is one of the mostversatile players to play in the league and in some ways, the luckiest. He wasable to play alongside Ramon Fernandez and Robert Jaworski during his Toyotadays and in the course of the 80’s he was able to unite with the other Crispalegends.

RANKED THIS LOW:

Tuadlesowns a career average of 13.6 points. Playing for 14 seasons, those statsacquired by Tuadles aren’t fluke numbers. While playing with a slew of Hall ofFamers is great and all, Tuadles could have been on a team that will treat himas the top dog. He is a small forward that can score, pass, and rebound andwith those traits in one player, that basically translates to legendarymaterial.

Pablois a dominating inside presence. Back then when 6’4 power forwards areconsidered as “towers”, he made a living to humiliate defenses. His best yearswere played with Shell where he got most of his achievements. Through theyears, he added a powerful weapon called the three-point shot in his bag oftricks.

RANKED THIS LOW:

Pablo’sdominance was halted when the Fil-Am invasion took place. When he returned toMobiline (he started his career with Pepsi) he lost his big man spot to AsiTaulava and Jerry Codinera (via the Andy Seigle trade). Five years beforecalling it quits, he became a second string option. He retired averaging11.3ppg – but that stat should have been a tad higher.

63 CHRIS JACKSON

Theguy played all five positions with ease. Picked fourth in the 1995 PBA Draft(Purefoods then traded his rights to Sta. Lucia), Jackson proved to everyonethat defense can score accolades. Whenever, he is sent to the scorer’s table,expect him to give the opposing star player hell. It was in Shell where hebecame a household name. He also has a decent 3-point shot that he uses whenthe situation arises.

RANKED THIS LOW:

Backthen, high calibre Fil-Ams are known scorers and not supplementary stars. Atsome point, people were expecting Jackson to put up massive scoring feats butthat didn’t happen. Jackson’s season best happened in 2001 with him hitting7.1ppg. Also, Jackson played eleven seasons but retired at age 39 – which meansthat Jackson was more or less 29 when he came to the league.

64 ENRICO VILLANUEVA

Hisplaying style personified what Red Bull is all about. Nelson Asaytono should beenvious at Rico because this could have been Asaytono if Red Bull happened in theearly 90’s. He was bullish in the paint and he will charge at anything just toscore a dunk or to grab a board. Whenever he pulls his shirt after adevastating dunk, people rise to the feet. He almost won a MVP award duringtheir storied rivalry against Kerby Raymundo and the Purefoods Chunkee Giants.

RANKED THIS LOW:

RedBull’s financial problems proved instrumental as to why Villanueva lost hisedge. He was the third player in the history of the PBA to play in all SMCfranchises (San Miguel/Petron, Purefoods/B-Meg, and Ginebra). It is very, veryhard to maintain a top-notch career by drifting from team to team. Holding thesame distinctions are Cris Bolado, Romel Adducul, and Paul Artadi. Of the four,Villanueva is probably the most successful.

65 WILLIE GENERALAO

THE GENERAL

It wasevident that Generalao would be a coach someday in both the majors and theminors because of his commanding presence every time he sets foot in the court.He is a pass-first player and would rather set up his teammates that devisescoring opportunities for himself. But that does not mean that he is not adecent scorer though.

RANKED THIS LOW:

Hefinished his career with 7.9ppg and 5.9apg which are productive numbers if youlook at a typical PBA landscape. In the 80’s the league was lucky to have sixteams and Generalao had to share the spotlight with other quarterbacks in theirchores. He was forced at times to become a backup point despite being at thepeak of his career.

66 DONDON HONTIVEROS

One ofa handful of MBA veterans who can safely say they enjoyed a great PBA career,the Cebuano Hotshot has the ability to shoot the lights out from all angles.And even if he is a scorer, coaches like him because of his impeccable defense.He has never averaged less than 10 points per season since joining the leaguein 2000. Up until his trade to Air21, he was the only SMB star player of theearly 2000’s to retain his starting spot despite the influx of young superstarsjoining the team (he has since returned with his mother club).

RANKED THIS LOW:

Hontiveros’career is quickly winding down and I think he missed out on a bunch of Mythicalselections. The guy is always with a team with a winning season but he can’tseem to get a break. Sure, in his PBA start, he was a fourth option but as theyears go by, we know the calibre of this ex-Cebu Gem. Like I said, Honti showingup with one Mythical Second Team citation is just surreal. Can we blame hisfrequent National team inclusions?

67 SONNY THOSS

THE BOSS

RANKED THIS HIGH:

Thossis a bigger and a more refined version of Poch Juinio. This is why he was TimCone’s main frontline find up until his departure to B-Meg. The Fil-Papuan is aterror on defense and this is why he is constantly tapped to represent thecountry in RP Team events. He is the only Alaska center to win the MythicalFive award twice.

RANKED THIS LOW:

He isan almost double-double magnet. While this is good in terms of rebounds, bythis time, his points need to level up. With the Aces, he is a sure 30 minutesper game player and in the current PBA landscape, he is the perfect combo ofsize and skill. Once he develops a consistent scoring formula, expect greatnessfrom The Boss.

IfManny Pacquiao has Freddie Roach, then Gary David should thank Bo Perasol forcoaching guidance. Whenever Perasol coaches a team that Gary David is in, Mr.Pure Energy becomes the focal point of the offense. But to give acclaim toGary’s skills, his ability to find the points in dire situations are enoughreasons why he is placed in this spot. He is also an underrated defender.

RANKED THIS LOW:

Haveyou seen David play outside Perasol? David looks lost when placed in a spot hedidn’t like (*cough* Yeng Guiao in Burger King *cough*). Also, David needs toplay for a title contender. He has already played in too many cellar dwellingsquads. When Air21 almost scored a championship, he was voted in the Mythical5. This is why if he wants to have a crack on another citation, he needs toplay for a winner.

69 TERRY SALDANA

IfMichael Jordan had two comebacks well... so did Terry Saldana! Saldana was adefensive demon up until an injury prematurely ended his career. Before theinjury though, he had the mold a la Arwind Santos. He returned in the 90’swhere he played for Swift and Ginebra before he went to the MBA. He returnedfor a one season stint with Red Bull before folding up his career.

RANKED THIS LOW:

In the80’s, he was a scorer who did his damage by hauling offensive rebounds andtranslating it into putbacks. When he returned in the 90’s, the scoring part ofhis game lessened especially since he became nothing more than a reliever. Hisscoring also went AWOL. Despite the injuries that ruined a potentially greatcareer, he finished with career averages of 8.3 points and 5.9 rebounds.

70 YOYONG MARTIREZ

1975 – 84

CAREER HIGHLIGHTS:

Playedin the 1972 Munich Olympics

Youngerpeople should know him as Vic Sotto’s sidekick during his Pipoy and Ritchie D’Horsie days but when it comes to the league’s all-time best pointguards, heranks high on the list. He finished his career with 6.4 points per game but hisclaim to fame is in his defense. He has a career average of 2.3 steals per game– which if the PBA counted it, is perhaps the best steals average in history(500 total steals and above). He also has a 4.4 assist average which helpedManny Paner and Estoy Estrada claim points.

RANKED THIS LOW:

Afactor why he is ranked this low is because he played outside Toyota and Crispa– which alongside with U-Tex, are the only teams that mattered then. Also, hadhe played a few more conferences, he could have at least obtained anotherachievement award (2,000 assists). And like I said earlier – he only scored aweak 6.4ppg.

Sohey... I just previewed seventy people.

He iscalled Big Dawg by the rest of the league but I like his other moniker better.Anyway, Pena was the wall that catapulted San Miguel to many championships inthe early 2000’s. With his frame, it was hard for him to get trounced on theinside and while his rebounding is his forte, he can score when needed.

RANKED THIS LOW:

Thereare a lot of people weirded at the fact that he is placed this high. San Miguelwon a lot of titles with him as just the “other” starter of the squad. Some saythat he was carried by his SMB teammates to claim those Mythical selections.Others can’t factor in why his “Negros-Slasher-dominating-inside-scoring” lefthim. Basically he was just lucky to be in this spot.

The best part of his career was played with Purefoods. Maybe asidefrom Alvin Patrimonio, Jerry Codinera, and Rey Evangelista, maybe thePurefoods/B-Meg squad could retire his number. He is also a 10-time All-Star.

RANKED THIS LOW:

Theformer UE and DLSU coach was never a scorer and was merely a supplementary guy.This was evident even when he briefly played for Pepsi and was dubbed as theirsuperstar. Pumaren was also unfortunate to get snubbed of a Mythical Fivecitation to give way for Johnny Abarrientos, Olsen Racela, and Al Solis.

53 RUDY DISTRITO

THE DESTROYER

Everyonethinks Distrito is just a defensive-oriented guard. Well, in a way he is but obviouslyhe is more than that. He is a smart player with an impeccable shot selection.He can also deliver in the closing seconds. He was instrumental when Ginebraclimbed from a 0-3 bind to win the 1991 First Conference. He completed hiscareer with a satisfactory 11.6ppg.

RANKED THIS LOW:

Distritois considerably high in the list since he is a mere supplementary star if youthink about it. But okay, the almost career-threatening injury he inflicted onJeff Cariaso while playing for Swift started his hell. He was banned in theleague for a span of time and Swift just waited for his contract to expire. Hiscareer got the shot in the arm when the San Juan Knights played in the MBA. Andthe rest? NicBelasco was the second overall pick in the 1997 PBA Draft by Pop Cola. He roseto fame with San Miguel as the upgraded version of Freddie Abuda. I said thisbecause Belasco had Abuda’s defensive tenacity but he also had an amazing knackto unload triples. Belasco was almost a double-double magnet in the 2000’s.This made him a sought-after star.

RANKED THIS LOW:

Youhave to check out the last statement I made. He was too much of a sought-afterstar that his final six years in the league were played with six differentteams. Belasco also didn’t start hot as a rookie and he was merely a substitutebecause people thought he was an inside presence. After his stint with Sta.Lucia where he averaged his lowest, the Fil-Am returned to the US.

55 AL SOLIS

If youcheck out his accolades and accomplishments, one thing that stands out is hisyearning to drum a triple. Al Solis is one of the deadliest 3-point shooters inthe history of the league. Initially known as an impact player with Purefoods,Solis had his best years playing for the Swift Mighty Meaties where he scoredtwo Mythical Five citations.

RANKED THIS LOW:

Hebasically got the starting job at Swift because the team is an expansion squad.The moment the franchise drafted Boybits Victoria, he was displayed. Fact is hewas never a point guard. He was a shooting guard that waits for the ball tocome to him so that he can shoot it. He is not a lazy though... but merelythat’s just the way he needs to operate.

THE ROBOCOP

TheRobocop is not here just because he spawned two amazing basketball-playingsons. Alvin Teng was a beast for the San Miguel squad of the late 80’s andearly 90’s where he often led the squad in rebounds. Frankly, he will neverback out of a challenge especially with regards to possession battles. He wasalso a gifted scorer as evident when he was traded to Pepsi. By the looks ofthings he was a superstar waiting to happen.

RANKED THIS LOW:

Tengwas the top dog in Pepsi because the talent in the squad was thin. He wastraded to Sunkist and back to Pepsi (no called as Mobiline) where he was usedas a second string power forward. This is the reason why The Robocop left theleague to join the MBA in its second season – playing for the Laguna Lakers andthe Negros Slashers. When he returned to the PBA via Alaska, he was ready toretire.

57 ESTOY ESTRADA

Thename Estoy Estrada screams monster scorer especially to those who saw him struthis wares. Basing the infos from the Hardcourt book, I got to know that Estradahas the third-best scoring average of all-time with 19.7ppg. His best year inthe PBA was during the inaugural season when he became part of the MythicalFive while playing for Royal Tru-Orange.

RANKED THIS LOW:

Checkingout the stats and the bios, Estrada only played eight seasons in the league. Atthat point, the awards are less and the roles of imports were more. Also, he driftedfrom team to team and at one point he joined the super-souped up Toyota squadin 1978 the same time super-scorer Danny Florencio also joined the squad. Also,he never won the scoring average award despite finishing third in the all-timelist.

THE RIFLEMAN

1975 – 1980

CAREER HIGHLIGHTS:

Playedin the 1968 Mexico Olympics

Playedin the 1972 Munich Olympics

RANKED THIS HIGH:

Inever saw him play but online accounts praise him as one of the deadliestshooters to ever set foot in the PBA. He averaged 17.5 points in six seasonsand alongside Danny Florencio, they were the only PBA players who played in theSummer Olympics twice. Before entering the PBA he was also a standout at theMICAA version of the Crispa Redmanizers.

RANKED THIS LOW:

He wasabout to celebrate his 30th birthday when the PBA started. If he was younger,he would have played more. Also, Papa went bye-bye from the MICAA version ofCrispa because he served a lifetime ban for allegedly game fixing achampionship series in 1973. He was one of six players involved in theincident. Why is this important? Undermanned, Baby Dalupan had no choice but toget young players to beef up his Crispa squad. Imagine if Papa was part of thePBA Crispa squad and not the players that were taken to fill up the void likeAtoy Co, Philip Cezar, Abet Guidaben, Freddie Hubalde, and Bernie Fabiosa? (Note:Bogs Adornado was part of the 1973 squad but he was proven innocent.)

59 KERBY RAYMUNDO

THE KID

2000 – PRESENT

In 2006, he almost won the MVP award had not for JamesYap. In some ways I see him as the Abet Guidaben of his generation.

RANKED THIS LOW:

Raymundo’scareer started slow. As a Red Bull direct hire, he got benched by the PBAoffice for almost a year because of falsification of documents. When he returnedto the squad he played behind Davonn Harp. Also, The Kid is currently sufferingfrom a bunch of injuries that is scary considering that most of the SMC teamsare severely talent-laden.

60 BONG ALVAREZ

MR. EXCITEMENT

RANKED THIS HIGH:

Mr.Excitement was the epitome of awesomeness when it comes to scoring. He canshoot anywhere at great ease and he can solve a defense by displaying hisacrobatic skills. He has this epic back to the basket mid-range shot that canbe frequently seen on PBA’s Dunkin Donuts Anything Goes halftime segment. Heholds the second-highest points total in a game with 71 points.

RANKED THIS LOW:

Mr.Excitement loves to change kits every time he feels like it. In his PBA career,he played for Alaska, Sta. Lucia, Shell, San Miguel, Ginebra, Air21, Red Bull,and Talk N Text. His journey also took him to the MBA via Pasig Blue Piratesand Pampanga Dragons. The problem of becoming a journeyman is that the coachwould rather rely on a player who knows his plays than a player who just got there. Since, he is a superstar in terms of skills and mindset,playing as a second fiddle would eat him and this will lead to managementspats. At the tailend of Alvarez’s career, his minutes dropped to the pointthat he is forced to accept one conference deals with the uncertainty ofrenewal.

So thereis still one 2-time Mythical Five player not yet mentioned in the list.

Why isJimmy Santos trending?

I’mjust curious. That’s all. I saw the PhilippineStar Tito, Vic, and Joey article but aside from a photograph, there was nomention of Jimmy Santos in the article.

Andthen researching the reason, I found out that his name was mentioned in Vice Ganda’s primetime show that aired last .

I am afan of Jimmy Santos. Any publicity he concurs will make me giddy. He got hisbiggest break when he portrayed an overgrown baby in Viva Films’ Bondying. The movie catapulted him to superstardom andhits like I love you 3x a day, WoolyBooly 1 & 2, and M & M made him extremely popular. His CarabaoEnglish and mannerisms can be easily distinguished. In TV, he gained acclaimplaying Aga Muhlach’s sidekick Gudo in one of Philippine TV’s mostpopular sitcoms Oki Doki Doc. And ofcourse, he is a mainstay in the country’s longest-running variety show Eat Bulaga.

Pluspeople may not know this but Santos is a PBApioneer. He played in 1975 for Seven-Up and in 13 games he averaged2.6ppg. In the 1991 PBA Legends Game, Jimmy joined fellow actors Yoyong Martirez, Atoy Co, and Freddie Webb.
